The Psychology of Data Visualization and Storytelling

"The Psychology of Data Visualization and Storytelling” explores how the human brain interprets information and why some charts inspire action while others fall flat. In this session, Stephen Davies unpacks the cognitive science behind visual perception, attention, and memory, and shows how these principles can transform everyday dashboards and presentations into compelling narratives. Whether you work in analytics, leadership, communications, or education, this talk will change the way you think about data and the stories it tells.

    Target Audience:

Anybody that creates visualizations from data using any tool (e.g., Excel, Power BI, PowerPoint, Tableau, R, Python, SAS etc.)

    Actionable Insights:

Attendees will leave with actionable insights on how to apply principles of perception, attention, and memory to make dashboards and presentations more intuitive, persuasive, and decision‑ready.

Stephen Davies is the CEO of DAVHILL Group, a business intelligence and data analytics company serving the Canadian Federal Government, and large public and private organizations. Stephen has more than 25 years of experience working as a consultant and corporate trainer. With an academic background in Physics and Engineering, he has previously worked in semiconductor and OEM manufacturing as an engineer and supply chain director. Early in his career, he started to do data analysis and never quite escaped.

Cloud-native Data Governance - why old approaches no longer work

Over the past few years, many companies have either migrated or are actively migrating to cloud-native data platforms: lakehouse architectures, data products, self-service BI, ML platforms, and multi-cloud environments. At the same time, data governance approaches in many organizations remain inherited from the era of on-premise systems and monolithic data warehouses—based on committees, manual processes, static policies, and centralized control. This creates a critical gap between: (i) the speed at which engineering and product teams work with data, and (ii) the organization’s ability to ensure data quality, security, regulatory compliance, and data reuse.

In a cloud-native environment, data is created, modified, and replicated across dozens of services, pipelines, and products every day. As a result, data governance can no longer exist as a separate bureaucratic function—it must be embedded directly into architecture, infrastructure, and engineering processes through policy-as-code, metadata-driven pipelines, data contracts, and automated controls.

Alexander Zhukov is a seasoned data governance leader and solution architect with over a decade of experience in data processing and analysis. He currently serves as the Data Governance Practice Lead at SoftServe, advising enterprise clients on implementing robust data governance frameworks and strategies. He founded DAMA Ukraine Kyiv in 2023. He was appointed as the DAMA European Regional Coordinator and later a Board Member at DAMA International®, he holds many industry recognized credentials including CDMP® (Practitioner) and TOGAF® 9.
